IOSH Managing Safely

IOSH Managing Safely Course For Team Leaders, Supervisors, and Managers

Course introduction

The IOSH Managing Safely course is one of the most widely recognised health and safety qualifications in the world, developed by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) in the United Kingdom. At The Gulf Safety & Industrial Training Institute, we deliver it as a practical, instructor-led programme built around real workplace situations rather than theory alone. By the end of the course you should be able to look at any task or work area, recognise what could go wrong, and put sensible controls in place before anyone gets hurt.

You do not need a safety background to begin. Most of our learners are line managers, supervisors, engineers, and team leaders who have found that safety has become part of their daily responsibility and who want a qualification that employers across Pakistan and the Gulf genuinely recognise and respect.

Who Should Attend & What You Will Learn

IOSH Managing Safely is aimed at anyone who has responsibility for the safety of a team, a site, or a process. It suits people who are not full-time safety professionals but who still need a solid, practical understanding of how to keep their people safe. It is ideal for those responsible for planning, supervising, or overseeing workplace activities where safety matters, and it works equally well across construction, manufacturing, oil and gas, facilities, and office environments.

What You Will Learn

The course is built around clear, practical objectives. By the time you finish, you will be able to:

  • Describe a manager’s legal and moral responsibilities for health and safety at work
  • Identify common workplace hazards and judge how serious the risk really is
  • Apply the hierarchy of control to remove or reduce risk in a practical, affordable way
  • Carry out and properly record a basic risk assessment for your own workplace
  • Investigate incidents to find the real root cause, not just the obvious symptom
  • Measure and review safety performance so improvement becomes part of daily work

Course Duration and Schedule

The standard IOSH Managing Safely course runs over three days of instructor-led training, covering roughly 21 hours of learning and assessment. We run both weekday and weekend batches so working professionals do not have to take extended leave, and we can also arrange in-house delivery for organisations training several staff at once. Certification

Assessment has two parts: a short multiple-choice paper and a practical risk-assessment project based on your own workplace. When you pass both, IOSH issues an internationally recognised IOSH Managing Safely certificate. The certificate does not formally expire, but IOSH recommends a refresher every three years to keep your knowledge current. It is accepted by employers throughout Pakistan and across the GCC.

Benefits, Outline & FAQs

Completing the IOSH Managing Safely course can significantly boost your confidence and credibility in managing workplace risks. For individuals, it is a strong, recognised line on a CV that tells employers you understand risk and can take responsibility for a team’s safety. For organisations, training supervisors to this standard reduces incidents, lowers the cost of accidents and downtime, and demonstrates a genuine commitment to compliance. It also serves as a stepping stone toward more advanced health and safety qualifications and roles.

Career Opportunities

Demand for safety-aware supervisors is consistently high across construction, oil and gas, manufacturing, and facilities management, particularly for those planning to work in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and Oman. The qualification commonly supports roles such as:

  • Health and Safety Team Leader
  • Safety Coordinator
  • Site Supervisor
  • Departmental Safety Representative

Course Outline

The programme is delivered in seven focused modules:

  • Introducing Managing Safely – why safety matters, the manager’s role, and hazard versus risk.
  • Assessing Risks – carrying out a structured risk assessment and prioritising what matters most.
  • Controlling Risks – applying the hierarchy of control to reduce risk to an acceptable level.
  • Understanding Responsibilities – the legal and moral duties of managers and the organisation.
  • Understanding Hazards – manual handling, slips and trips, fire, electricity, and hazardous substances.
  • Investigating Incidents – finding root causes and turning lessons into action.
  • Measuring Performance – using audits, inspections, and indicators to keep improving.

Do I need prior experience? No prior qualification is required. The course is designed for people new to formal safety responsibilities.

How long is the certificate valid? It does not formally expire, but a refresher every three years is recommended to stay current with good practice.

Is the certificate recognised in the Gulf? Yes. IOSH is a UK awarding body with strong international recognition across the GCC.

What if I do not pass? We provide guidance and support throughout, and re-assessment can be arranged so you are fully prepared.
